Course Overview

Research on organizational behaviour reinforces the link between team performance and psychological safety. (1) Studies show that teams with psychological safety tend to outperform those without. Fear in the workplace inhibits learning, cooperation and innovation and impacts organizational culture. Psychologically safe teams interact more freely without fear of judgment or rejection, and feel supported with respect to innovation, creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.

In response to the adoption of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in 2019 (2) and call to action, more organizations have increased their focus on ESG and reporting. This includes an assessment of the impacts they are having on the Environment in which they operate, the relationships with internal and external stakeholders (Social), and how they Govern. Globally boards are working with their leadership teams to help align with SDG goals and to demonstrate accountability through action plans which include employee well-being and psychological safety.

This interactive workshop is designed to increase leader awareness regarding the key elements of a psychologically safe workplace building on research on human interactions including that conducted by Harvard Professor Amy Edmondson (3). It is intended to also help leaders identify potential risks related to psychological safety, and to collaboratively share ways to help mitigate potential or emerging risks through actionable strategies. It shall highlight the benefits of creating a culture of psychological safety in the workplace.
